Gerhard started his career at universities in Germany and the USA. For more than 15 years he did research and teaching on software and systems engineering, programming environments and artificial intelligence. He was the founding director of the German AI Research Center, which was sponsored by leading IT enterprises from Germany and across Europe.

Following this, he was the CIO of Daimler-Benz, Alcatel and Dresdner Bank. Over a period of 15+ years, he was deeply involved in the integration of business and IT strategies.

Gerhard performed numerous consulting activities for international enterprises and acted as an interim executive. Thereby, he covered diverse areas, such as designing and implementing business and IT architectures, defining and realizing IT strategies, consolidating application and data portfolios, initiating business and IT transformations, conceptualizing sourcing strategies and governing merger initiatives. These projects were performed in diverse industry sectors, such as telecommunication, automotive, financial institutions, public affairs and luxury goods. In addition to that, he has a great deal of experience in presenting complex business and IT related topics to industrial audiences.

Gerhard holds a Master of Computer Science degree from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), as well as a PhD degree from the University of Kaiserslautern.
